The customer is an online retailer of hard to find video products.

CHALLENGE

The attacks began as simple denial of service bandwidth attacks from a small number of sources against a single server in a tier-2 hosting provider. Over the course of two weeks, these attacks escalated in a rapidly evolving technological warfare scenario to sophisticated bot- net attacks with over 150,000 unique IP address sources targeting shopping cart applications.

SOLUTION

The SSO solution encompassed working with tier-1 bandwidth providers, intrusion prevention system (IPS) vendors, content delivery networks, proxy caching technologies, high end DNS management services, zombie block lists, and custom code on web and application servers to mitigate the attacks.

BENEFIT

The customer was able to offer their products to be sold online via their web site over the course of the attacks with minimal downtime.
Without the expertise of SSO personnel, the customer would have lost significant revenues. While most internet based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks will not reach the sophistication of this case study, SSO is prepared to do this and more to ensure that our customers' servers stay available under even the most hostile of conditions.
